New Moon, Solar Eclipse As The World Celebrates Christmas 2019

Today as the world celebrates the return of God’s son, Jesus Christ, cosmically, we are experiencing a Solar Eclipse in the sidereal sign of Sagittarius in the nakshatra of Mula.

Let’s get some of the astronomy clear at the get go. In an attempt to spread Christianity, the Christian church pinned the birth of Christ on December 25^th, to match the pagan celebration of winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Due to the procession of equinoxes, solstice now occurs either on December 21^st or December 22^nd (This year it was December 21^st in the western hemisphere). So essentially, Christmas, the return of Sun (Son) is a solstice celebration, where the Sun begins its northern course in the sky as seen from Earth. This phenomenon is also called as Uttarayana (Uttar = north, ayana = movement). The Indian calendar, however, has not corrected for procession of equinoxes and still celebrates #solstice on Makar Sankranti in mid-January, when the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn (Makar=Capricorn, Sankranti = transmigration of the Sun from one space in the sky to the next). #Uttarayana has not occurred on #MakarSankranti for few thousand years now. Solstice is the shortest day (winter) or shortest night (summer) in the northern hemisphere; opposite in the southern hemisphere (Figure 1). After winter solstice, the days gradually become longer till summer solstice. Equinoxes are the days of equal day and night. Winter solstice is of particular importance because it marks the beginning of end of winter, and return of more light, heat, energy and vitality. 

It is also important to make note that the Gregorian calendar dates do not align with the astronomical event anymore. It is crucial that we choose to live more consciously and aware, and not succumb to the passivity that is so heavily ingrained in our cultural system.

Coincidentally, we also have a solar eclipse today. On this #newmoon , the Sun and Moon come together in the sign of Sagittarius; Sun being  eclipsed by the south node of the Moon, called Ketu. This eclipse is happening in the nakshatra of Mula, joined by Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn (Figure 2).  Most often we do not let ourselves feel deeply disgusted. But when fully allowed, disgust shows areas of our life that we see ourselves too good to endure, disgust shows areas that need immediate and often rapid change, in fact our deep disgust eventually forces us to detach and act.

Sagittarius is a sign of our belief systems, religion, organizations and institutions where we have our faith attached to, and things that bring us hope, joy and purpose. It is a great time to take an inventory of systems (beliefs) that do not serve our higher self, next phase in life or evolutionary growth anymore. How does one identify things that do not serve them? Look for areas in your life that incite deep disgust (Ketu brings disgust). The modern society somehow doesn’t allow for full cultivation of the #disgust as an #emotion.

The nakshatra of Mula ruled by Kali, also known as Nirrti, shows a high potential to tap into the divine disgust, uproot the systems that do not work for us (be it habits, behaviors, relationships, faith, religion, politics, work ethics, or just a way of being), and prepare for the next phase of our lives. If things get too intense, use music or sound as a healing therapy and anchor yourself in the deity (devotion of) that you most resonate with; Venus in the nakshatra of Shravan will support this. Full Moon in Bharani - November 12th, 2019

This morning’s #fullmoon in #Bharani nakshatra (constellation) and spanning into #Krittika (the next nakshatra) reminds us of the consequences of our actions. Bharani lies in #Aries, the zodiac that starts with the nakshatra of #Ashwini. In Ashwini, the soul is impulsive to take action and penetrates creation but in the next nakshatra, the soul bears the fruits of the action. Bharani is symbolised with #yoni, literally means ‘to bear’, is ruled by #Venus and the deity #Yama. All symbology for Bharani refers fierce, and ruthless energy that makes us face the consequence of a particular action. At its highest vibration, Bharani symbolises #creation originating from the female reproductive parts.

The new moon is Libra couple of weeks ago set forth the fight for equality. We then had #Jupiter move into Sagittarius on Nov 4th compelling us towards justice or just actions. Jupiter crossed the gandhaata point (last 1 degrees of Scorpio (water sign) and first 1 degrees of Sagittarius (fire sign)) leading to personal and collective upheaval. Notice the emotional distress and the urge to stand up against injustice. Also notice the internal misery one may go through if unable to speak up for what’s right or just.

#Mercury also went retrograde on October 31 in Scorpio, right now traversing through Libra in the opposite direction w.r.t Earth. Mercury backing up from a water sign (Scorpio) into an air sign (Libra) is making us reevaluate the relationship betweeen our intellect and emotions. Are we too emotional when we speak? Does emotions cloud our rational thinking? Our we so intellectual that we are not in touch with ours or other’s emotions? Are we cerebral and disconnected from our feelings? Do we manipulate other’s emotions through our crafty intellect? We maybe working through any version of these themes. Overall, most of us are reevaluating our intellectual strategies for the battles we are emotionally passionate about - some examples include LGBTQ equality, environmental change, saving the planet, pay disparity, immigration, affordable food and shelter for all, affordable access to medicine, basic level comfort for all - amongst others.

The Full Moon in Bharani brings us the fruits of our actions or inaction. Yama, the God of death is impartial, unswayed, just and maintains balance sheets of all our karmas (actions, inactions and intentions). He is the one who is said to deliver the soul to judgement day. Venus ruling Bharani is also driven by transactions which are equal - like balancing an accounts book. If Venus perceives imbalance, it throws everything off that Venus stands for. In essence, the energies of Yama, Venus, and Bharani nakshatra are all within us. These energies get activated from time to time. It is a great time to weigh the ripple effects of our actions/inactions. We can elevate the current energies available by tuning into how we affect our surroundings and how our surroundings affect us - be it our home, people in life, political scenario or the Earth. We all have the power to create positive change - even if it’s on a nanoscale. The question is, have we given ourselves the permission to do so or the potential consequence of our actions is weighing us down!

Personally, I have been coping with internal misery of not having a voice against certain unjust behaviors that my surroundings have been subjected to due to my immigration status. I told someone today that my immigration status is more important to me at this point than my well-being. The internal suffocation of not being able to stand for equality and justice is enormous. My sincere wish is that all of us have the opportunity to lead a just, empowered, and fulfilling life while creating a positive change in the world.

Diwali

Happy Diwali!

#Diwali is celebrated on the New Moon in sidereal Libra marking the end of Ashwin and beginning of Kartik month.

Cosmologically, Diwali is an important day; Sun is at its weakest in Libra and Moon is not far away from its debilitation on this #NewMoon in the year. Sun our inner fuel, power and our connection to the soul is the weakest on this day. Indians celebrate Diwali by lighting lamps in their homes and community dwellings. Lighting of the lamp, especially the oil lamp, is auspicious as it provides focus to the inner energies and supports the Sun in us. Sun is our association with power, control and authority – whether inner or outer. When the Sun is transiting through Libra, notice your dysfunctional association with power. The tendency to give away our own power to please or accommodate others is very high.

Many mythological stories are associated with Diwali. The one that is celebrate widely is the return of #Rama along with his wife #Sita, brother #Laxman and devotee #Hanuman to his kingdom #Ayodhya after 14 years in exile. Rama belonged to the Sun Dynasty and was an incarnation of #Vishnu whereas Sita was an incarnation of #Laxmi. On Diwali, Laxmi is invited into homes and worshipped, symbolizing Sita’s return back into her home. The myth is that the Chathurdashi preceding Diwali (eve of Diwali, also called as Naraka Chathurdashi) was so dark that the citizens of Ayodhya lit the roads leading upto and within Ayodhya with millions of lamps to enable Rama and his entourage to find their way back home.

Since, Sun is weakest in Libra, Rama (also an embodiment of the Sun) was humbled by the great Lanka King Ravana when Sita was abducted by Ravana. There have been several contemporary analyses of the Ramayana highlighting Rama’s weaknesses. (1) Outright humiliation of Shurpanaka by Rama, (2) Sita’s implicit urge to her husband to step up and rescue her when she was well versed in warrior craft, could have protected herself, and easily escaped with Hanuman, and (3) Rama’s inability to standup for Sita when the kingdom questioned her chastity upon return from Lanka. Contemporary mythologists also pour accolades on Ravana for his beyond superior intelligence. Hanuman, the son of wind God Vayu, was Rama’s accomplice on the mission to rescue Sita. Vayu also rules the constellation of Swati in which the New Moon of Diwali falls in.



Sun in the sky is very steady; it maintains the solar system with certain fixed laws of physics, the fixed and stable nature of the Sun essential for the steady functioning of the solar system that we inhabit. Rama like the Sun was fixed in his nature, bound by his duties, and unwavering. This was important to run a majestic kingdom like Ayodhya. These qualities of Rama (Sun) are exalted in Aries and supported very well in Leo because the Sun can reign its power while sitting on the throne. Libra is the marketplace where relationships, trade, barter, and transactions - all involving give and take are the norm. A marketplace is where power is dispersed in the hands of the traders and consumers. This weakens the Sun. Rama’s fixed nature towards his duties as a King caused him eventual separation with Sita and his children. Rama chose to be a king first. Also remember, when Prince Gautama visited the marketplace he could no longer be oblivious to the common man’s life and was compelled to abandon his majestic life to live like a monk.

Modern society is a marketplace making it difficult to reign #innerpower and follow a path of #dharma. Instead of being scattered in the marketplace like the monkeys, one can emulate Hanuman to reign inner power through breath (wind, #pranayam), cultivate deep undying #devotion and selfless #service for a cause bigger than our egos and irrational mind-chatter.

My wish for everyone this Diwali is to own their own power and be the change, walk a path of inner truth instead of people-pleasing, decondition instead of blindly conform, recognize abusive authority, develop a healthy relationship with oneself and authority figures, find deep love and devotion, and above all live as if your life makes a magnificent impact on this cosmos.

Navratri: The Inner Evolution of Form

Navratri began on September 29^th. It is a nine day festival worshiping the different forms of the Shakti culminating in Dussherra, the tenth day celebrating the victory of good over evil (both words good and evil used subjectively).

#Navratri starts on the first day (first tithi, pratipada) after the new moon in sidereal Virgo, in the month of Ashvin. New Moon in Hasta occurred on Sept 28^th, setting off an intense transformative energy that also celebrates the divine feminine.

The main Goddess of worship during Navratri is Durga. Through the nine days, the evolving forms of the Durga are worshiped, namely, Shailputri (day 1), Bramacharini (day 2), Chandraghanta (day 3), Khushmanda (day 4), Skandmata (day 5), Katyayani (day 6), Kalaratri (day 7), Mahagauri (day 8), and Siddhidhatri (day 9). 

Durga is first worshiped as Shailputri (Parvati),  the daughter of the mountain king, then as the tapsvini, Bramacharini, who practiced austerity to marry Shiva. She then takes the form of Chandraghanta to coax Shiva to take a socially acceptable form to marry her. She is then worshiped as the fertile and creative form (Khushmanda), as the mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda (Kartikeya) mata (mother)), as the fierce transformative force (Katyayani and Kalaratri), as the all empowered, resplendent woman (MahaGauri), and finally as the one who has attained and also the one who bestows the highest wisdom (Siddhidhatri). As the fetus evolves in the womb for nine months, so are the evolving forms of Durga from maiden, mother, to all empowering feminine, worshiped through the nine days.  Shakti is all pervasive, taking various physical forms like the mountains, rivers, ocean, the five elements, body, and others - yet she remains formless. She is takes tangible forms yet her essence lies in the intangible. 

I am writing about the forms of Durga worshiped this Navratri because it very relevant to the current affairs. Women of eastern cultures are allowed mostly to express their maiden and motherly natures; the maiden phase often expressed as weak, submissive, and 'nice' girl. Very seldom are they encouraged to embrace all their power, walk in the truth of their being, and shine their light brighter than the Sun. As I reflect upon the inner transformations of Parvati, as a young girl, to Siddhidhatri, I realize that not only women of the east but also women and men around the globe haven't given themselves permission to embrace their own authentic power.

The month prior to this Navratri brought the heat of Mars aspect on Jupiter in Scorpio, making us reevaluate teachers, teachings, principles, laws, organized thought processes, religions, and authority figures. The rise of authoritarianism globally has been the talk of town. During this Navratri, notice being put through the wringer to choose between personal power and authoritarian control. Mars now joined Sun and Venus in sidereal Virgo, and aspecting Saturn and Ketu in sidereal Sagittarius will highlight the themes of control and power. Notice the feelings of injustice or unfairness rise in you. Saturn is the part of us that seeks justice and equality for all, hence, it is highly perceptive of inequalities. Mars pushing Saturn to a boiling point with its one way aspect will push us to act on the inequalities, whether social or personal. Rahu transiting in sidereal Gemini directly opposite Saturn is also seeking pathways outside the existing norms with a strong intention of destroying the unjust norms. Venus in sidereal Virgo has a hard time being content in relationships and transactions (personal, social or business) that are not mutually beneficial. Sun joined Venus and Mars is highlighting the muck of the world that we are traversing through - yes it feels like walking through molasses.  Together as a global society, we are undergoing immense change which may also be apparent at a personal level. Rejection of authority figures and policies that do not serve us on a higher scale will be very common. 

What is required from each one of us is a high level of maturity in walking our paths with absolute authenticity like Maha Durga; instead of fighting for worldly power, reclaim the inner power and stay steady on our paths; fight for justice in a non-violent way; have a high personal standard of existence in the world; exercise great judgment and discretion without blindly following authorities; and be an active and not passive participant of life and the world. 

August 29th, 2019: New Moon in Sidereal Leo: Your Relationship to Power.

The moon joint Sun, and combust Mercury, Mars and Venus in the sign of Leo and the constellation of Magha brings intense focus on power, authority and our relationship to it. Magha, the constellation ruled by Ketu symbolizes the King, so does the zodiac sign Leo. The stellium of planets in Leo brings in intense scrutiny of people in power. Magha and the next constellation Purva Phalguni represent the king and the kingdom. A dharmic king works in servitude of his people; all others abuse and enjoy power for themselves in micro and macro ways.

Mercury, our ability to discriminate and communicate, Mars, our ability to take rightful actions, and Venus, our ability to be in relationship with the other through compromise are all combust – meaning, they are transiting so close enough to the Sun for their energies to get burnt (and purified in the process). Notice the polarizing ideologies in the world (Mercury); notice your own frustrations come up (Mars), especially with authority figures; notice your unwillingness to compromise at the expense of yourself and your values (Venus); and notice all these operative forces coming to a boiling point. If it is hard to notice these things in your personal life then you can notice them in the world – Amazon rainforest burning up (Fire, combust Mars, Leo) and the authorities around the globe stuck on opposing ideas about it; the polarizing trends in American and other politics.

In this era, money and capitalism dictates power. This new moon cycle will also bring up and scrutinize your relationship to money. Ultimately, power has to do with your ability to give and receive. When you are generous and do something for the other, you automatically feel powerful. When you teach, you step into power; when you lead, you step into power. But actions conducted for one to just have a sense of power, sooner or later brings misery. On the other hand, when you give (or are made to give, like the corporate world) much more than you receive, the equation becomes abusive.

In this mix, we have Jupiter in Scorpio that turned direct in motion with respect to Earth. Jupiter is our teachings, teachers, principles, beliefs, religion, hope, and faith. Jupiter in Scorpio underscores our imagined and irrational fears, and eccentric behaviors with Gurus, with disciples, and with belief systems, religion and dogma. Jupiter is also receiving one way (4^th) aspect from Mars in Leo, building up immense pressure and irrational fears with the Jupiter areas of life. It is quite possible to see people’s eccentric beliefs and ideologies come to a boiling point. Jupiter is also soon going to enter the gandhanta point between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and also rules Saturn-Ketu conjunction in Sagittarius (oh boy!). I wouldn’t be surprised if a sex or a money scandal with one of the prominent Gurus broke out. I actually started writing an article about Guru and how it is a word with a heavy baggage. In the New Age business, Gurus are the ones in power. When you teach, you create a hierarchy of power between you and the other person, and the opportunity to abuse power at a micro and macro level. The Gurus and teachers of spiritual / consciousness movement have all been surrounded by stories of abusive power. This begets the question about the true Guru - how does one recognize one’s Guru? There is no one answer, only more questions.  

It is time to tap into your inner strength and courage to navigate the systems of worldly powers to connect to the true divine power. 

July 31st, 2019, Los Angeles: New Moon in Cancer, Month of Shraavana

This New Moon in Cancer, in the constellation of Pushya marks the beginning of the month of Shraavana. The month is named Shraavana according to Indian calendar because the full moon will most likely occur in the constellation of Sravana or Dhanistha directly opposite that of Pushya in Cancer.  The month of Shraavana is considered very auspicious because the entire Indian sub-continent experiences monsoon during this time. It is also considered Lord Shiva’s favorite month as Parvati did immense penance in this month to have him as her husband. Astrologically speaking, the New Moon in Cancer is preceded by the New Moon in Gemini cycle where Rudra, the fierce form of Shiva destroys the creation that has gone corrupt. Rudra’s tears post-destruction when hits the earth gives rise to new flora and fauna – this is depicted in the stories of Punarvasu and Pushya in Cancer. One can draw analogies to the monsoon in the Indian subcontinent bringing life to the flora and fauna after a spell of extreme summer that burns up most life. Most devotees of Shiva will start a 16 Monday fast in this month to celebrate the abundance of life.

Shraavan is also the month when many poets and artists compose new pieces inspired by the sounds in nature. It is not surprising that the constellations of Sravana and Dhanistha symbolize sound and music The Full Moon on August 15^th will occur in the nakshatra of Dhanistha. I remember some of my favoriate poems in Marathi are on the beauties of Shraavan month and I would read them with renewed vigor as I watched the rains, inhaled the fresh air & smell of wet soil, and enjoyed the sound of raindrops against my window.

Many may also feel a renewed vigor this August because of Mercury and Jupiter going direct, and Mars coming out of debilitation as it moves into Leo. Notice what got uprooted last month. It may have been a change in habit or lifestyle, unearthing office politics and gossip, discovering false promises, technical problems with electronic devices, softwares and websites, identifying ways by which you bleed money,  realizing the dark underside of authorities in power, acknowledging your own inner indiscipline, lack of vitality and motivation, and non-clarity in your approach to life. Many of us might have felt parched for true inner nourishment.

Jupiter will station for a few weeks before it begins its forward movement in the sky. It may bring up the feeling of being choked about things that bring us hope before we feel a sigh of relief. Mars will transit over the Gandhanta (junction) point between Cancer and Leo around August 6 to 10 making us feel irritated due to low energy, focus and discipline. Renewed sense of energy will be experienced by many after Mars has completely transitioned into Leo. Saturn will also begin to slow down in preparation of its forward movement in September. Venus transiting close to the Sun in the sky (phenomenon called combustion) may burn the impurities in our relating to others. Back biting, politics, manipulations and inconsistencies in relationships may surface making us feel burnt. Make sure to take the tonics of self-love and self-care.

It is good time to find inner joy in anything that has rhythm and music. See if music leads you to nature. Seek out streams, waterfalls, waves of ocean, birds in forest and the sound of breeze. Notice how these move you towards renewed life.

Full Moon, July 16th, Guru Purnima, Lunar Eclipse

This full moon occurring in the nakshatram of Uttara Ashada (in Sagittarius) is known Guru Purnima. It is said to be the day, about 15,000 years ago, when Adi(first) Yogi, Shiva became the Adi Guru to seven sages. Uttara Ashada is also considered the birth nakshatram of Ganesha. We have the lunar eclipse on this day with Saturn and Ketu joined the moon in Sagittarius directly opposite Sun, Rahu and Venus in Gemini.

Many of us are experiencing an inner friction of our individual identities and interests with our higher principles. Social themes that effect well-being at an individual level are at a rise. Awareness of disparities in income, healthcare, housing, education, employment, management-employee wages, quality of life and opportunities for a better standard of living and personal growth is high right now. Ketu and Saturn are bringing in intense scrutiny of the current operative systems at the individual, social, culture and political levels. Venus and Rahu joined the Sun in Gemini are bringing in much needed disruption, chaos and reevaluation of our relationships with the other.

Uttara Ashada (literally means the later victorious one) is ruled by the Sun. Sun is the part of us that sheds light and purifies the areas we are unwilling to see. Notice the tendency to feel frustrated with the disparities we observe in the world, in the inconsistencies of our relationships and the lack of our spiritual growth.

Ganesha, the elephant head deity is also related to Ketu. Ketu is the headless celestial body and Ganesha had his head cut off, to be replaced later with an elephant’s head. Ketu eclipsing the moon may bring up unaddressed past patterns, actions, karmas and relationships either in real life or in our dreams. There is also a high scrutiny of the unaddressed past which can be mind bogging. Invoking Ganesha, will bring in the potential to be an observer and a listener instead of reactor. Invoking Shiva, the Adi Guru, brings in light to see reality sans our filters and judgement.

While many predict gloom and doom, I am of the view that we are living in times that has high potential to raise our intellectual frequencies, our consciousness and our discernment. It is a great time to embark on the journey of truth as it pertains to self in relation to the world. It is a great time to reevaluate our beliefs and principles and really commit to pure teachings.

It is our responsibility to keep our vessel clean to receive the highest order of teachings from the Universe.
